MOT Tests: The Facts
All on-the-road vehicles in the UK must have a valid MOT pass certificate, which confirms that they’re roadworthy and safe to drive, and that their exhaust levels meet the standards for vehicle emissions.
You need to get a new MOT certificate every year, on the anniversary of the last MOT - unless your vehicle is less than three years old, in which it needs its first MOT certificate renewal on the third anniversary of its registration.
Under the Road Traffic Act 1988, it is a criminal offence to drive a non-exempt vehicle without a valid MOT certificate, except if you’re travelling to a pre-booked MOT test, or an appointment with a garage to have repair work carried out following a failed MOT test. In addition, your car insurance will be invalid without an MOT certificate.
If you get caught driving after your current MOT has run out, you risk a maximum fine of £1000 (though you can also be additionally fined and even sent to prison for driving with serious vehicle faults and driving without insurance).
Certain vehicles are exempt from MOT certificate requirements (such as those manufactured before 1960, for example). The ‘Declaration from exemption of MOT’ (V112) form has a full list of all exempt vehicles, but if you’re unsure about your own vehicle, just give us a call on 023 8081 2970 and one of our expert MOT testers can advise you.
